FAQ: Available Download Sets

There are four different download sets from which powerKNOW can be installed. All sets contain the same complete version of powerKNOW. They only differ in the amount of additional software included (which may be required for installation) and in the web server used.

Criteria for selecting a download set:

¹ Before installing powerKNOW you have to make sure all prerequisites are met. ² For some of the prereqisites (IIS, Internet Explorer) you still have to do the installation before powerKNOW can be installed. ³ Additional information will be needed during installation to be able to connect to the database engine and create the powerKNOW database

Web server to be used
powerKNOW is able to run under Internet Information Server (IIS) or Cassini.

IIS is available with most windows versions (not Windows XP Home Edition). It has to be installed as a windows option from the Windows installation CD before powerKNOW can be installed to run under IIS. If you want to use IIS use powerknow-setup-iis.exe or powerknow-setup-iis-expert.exe

Cassini is a free web server for windows systems. It is intended to be used for test installations and low load production installations. Unlike IIS Cassini will run under Windows XP Home Edition. It is possible to include Cassini in install sets. If you want to use Cassini use powerknow-setup.exe or powerknow-setup-expert.exe

We recommend using Cassini for test installations as this makes installation more simple. For production use you may switch to IIS.
Upgrading an existing installation of powerKNOW
If you are running powerKNOW under IIS please use powerknow-setup-iis-expert.exe

If you are running powerKNOW under Cassini please use powerknow-setup-expert.exe
Use of existing Microsoft SQL Server / MSDE
If you already have Microsoft SQL Server or MSDE up and running and you want to use this engine for your test / installation of powerKNOW use: powerknow-setup-iis-expert.exe or powerknow-setup-expert.exe
These install sets will not install a new MSDE engine. While installing you will need to know server name and instance name of the database as well as name and password of a database administrator. These info is needed to connect to the database engine and create the powerKNOW database and tables.

If you don't have Microsoft SQL Server or MSDE up and running or you simply do not want to use it for powerKNOW use: powerknow-setup-iis.exe or powerknow-setup.exe
Computer to install on has internet access
If the machine you want to install on does not have internet access it's best to select one of these install sets: powerknow-setup-iis.exe or powerknow-setup.exe
Both sets include the .NET framework.

It's also possible to use the other sets. But you have to make sure all the requirements are met before you are able to install powerKNOW.
Windows XP Home edition is to be used
If you want to run powerKNOW on Windows XP Home edition as a server IIS will not be available to you. IIS is not offered as an option of Windows XP Home edition. You will need to use one of the Cassini sets: powerknow-setup.exe or powerknow-setup-expert.exe

Download sets available

powerknow-setup.exe (Download)

This is the normal download set. It's designed for easy installation. Normally you can run this set by simply clicking 'Next' and accepting the license agreement.
- Will automatically check all OS and .NET requirements and offer an installation if needed
- Contains: .NET framework, MSDE database engine, Internet Explorer update initiator, Cassini web server, powerKNOW
powerknow-setup-expert.exe (Download)

This set is intended for installations where an database engine is already installed and shall be used or where an existing installation of powerKNOW with Cassini shall be upgraded.
- Will automatically check all OS and .NET requirements and offer an installation if needed
- Contains: Cassini web server, powerKNOW
- During installation (not upgrade) you will be asked for the information required to connect to the database engine and create the powerKNOW database.
powerknow-setup-iis.exe (Download)

This set is designed for easy installation under IIS.
- Will automatically check all OS and .NET requirements and offer an installation if needed and possible. Automatic installation is not possible for IIS. You will have to install IIS before powerKNOW can be installed (IIS is an optional Windows component)
- Contains: .NET framework, MSDE database engine, Internet Explorer update initiator, powerKNOW
powerknow-setup-iis-expert.exe (Download)

This set is intended for installations where an database engine is already installed and shall be used or where an existing installation of powerKNOW with IIS shall be upgraded.
- Will automatically check all OS and .NET requirements and offer an installation if needed and possible. Automatic installation is not possible for IIS. You will have to install IIS before powerKNOW can be installed (IIS is an optional Windows component)
- Contains: powerKNOW
- During installation (not upgrade) you will be asked for the information required to connect to the database engine and create the powerKNOW database.
