FAQ: Install powerKNOW Fast Track

powerKNOW is a web application. As such it is only installed on the web server. After successful installation it can be accessed by every client using a matching browser (see Client-Requirements).

To make installation fast and easy follow these instructions:
  • If you want to run powerKNOW under Internet Information Server (IIS) download powerknow-setup-iis.exe.
If you want to run powerKNOW under Cassini web server download powerknow-setup.exe. Cassini is included in the download. Therefore you do not need to do a separate installation of a web server.

For other download sets and for the differences between the available download sets see "Download Sets".

  • If you want to run powerKNOW under IIS and IIS is not already installed on your machine install it now.

IIS is a Windows component. It can be installed from
ControlPanel > Add or Remove Programms
                     > Add/Remove Windows Components
                         > Internet Information Server
For details on installing IIS especially if you want to install on Windows Server 2003 see "Installing IIS".

  • You need admininstrator rights on the installation machine to install powerKNOW.

  • Start the self extracting archiv you downloaded in the first step.

Normally you should be able to install by simply accepting the defaults and clicking "Next" in all the steps provided.

You can find more details about the different steps in "Install powerKNOW step by step".

After installation and configuration have finished you are free to remove the directory where the self extracting archive unpacked to and the archive itself.

You should now be able to start powerKNOW. If you installed powerKNOW under IIS direct your browser to "localhost/powerKNOW" [If you changed the name of the virtual directory during installation of powerKNOW it will be "localhost/xxx" with xxx being the name of the virtual directory].
If you installed powerKNOW with Cassini web server direct your browser to "http://localhost:7756/GoToApplication.aspx?AppID=03157A7C-69C3-45D9-8F97-3A1173FAB458". You will be redirected to a much shorter URL. You can use this shorter URL in future.

If you installed on Windows XP with ServicePack2 see here for additional information.
