FAQ: Install powerKNOW step by step

powerKNOW is a web application. As such it is only installed on the web server. After successful installation it can be accessed by every client using a matching browser (see Client-Requirements).

To install powerKNOW you download one of the available download sets and start it. For the differences between the sets see "Download Sets".

The whole installation is designed to make installing powerKNOW as easy as possible. If you use the normal download set you should be able to install by simply pressing 'NEXT' in every step of the install wizard. However you will need to change some settings if you want to use your own database or if you changed the default configuration of IIS.

You need admininstrator rights on the installation machine to install powerKNOW.

If you want to run powerKNOW under Internet Information Server (IIS) you will have to install IIS first. IIS is an optional Windows component which has to be installed from the control panel. For details see: "Installing IIS"

Step by Step

Some of these steps / screens will not show up in your installation because the step depends on special conditions. In the description of the steps we will provide information about this.

To start the process simply start the self extracting archive you downloaded.

Extraction dialog.

powerKNOW comes as a self extracting archive. Default path for the folder to extract to is c:\powerKNOWtemp. You can change the folder as needed.

Press "Install" to start extraction and installation.

Prerequisites wizard

The powerKNOW prerequisites wizard is automatically started after extraction of the archive. It will check all neccessary prerequisites and start the installation of powerKNOW itself afterwards.

Press "Next" to continue.

Prerequisite: Internet Information Server

Presence of IIS is only checked if you used one of the download sets designed for installing powerKNOW under IIS. In this case powerKNOW requires Internet Information Server to be installed and running.

You will see this dialog only if you did not install Internet Information Server before running the powerKNOW installation pack.

As IIS is an optional windows component it has to be installed from windows component setup.
To continue:
  • Cancel powerKNOW installation
  • Install IIS from
    Start
       > ControlPanel
       > Add or Remove Programs
       > Add/Remove Windows Components
    Enable Internet Information Services (IIS)
If you are installing on Windows Server 2003 also enable ASP.NET. (details)
  • Restart powerKNOW installation
If IIS is not available to you (eg. installing on Windows XP Home edition) choose one of the download sets for Cassini web server instead.

Prerequisite: Internet Exporer

powerKNOW requires Internet Explorer 5.5 or better.

You will see this dialog only if you have got an older version of Internet Explorer.

Prerequisite wizard offers an address to download and install an actual version of Internet Explorer.

Prerequisite: .NET Framework

powerKNOW requires the .NET Framework 1.1 to be installed.

In this case prerequisite wizard offers to install it from disk (it's part of the normal install set)

Press "Install" to install the .NET Framework.

"Expert" install sets: The expert install sets do not include the framework. If it is missing on your machine prerequisite wizard will instead offer an address to download from.

Prerequisite: Microsoft SQL Server or MSDE

powerKNOW requires Microsoft SQL Server 2000 or MSDE 2000.

Prerequisite wizard will install a new instance of MSDE on your machine. For the specifics of this MSDE instance see below.

"Expert" install sets: The expert install sets do not include a MSDE. Therefore it will never show this dialog. If you use one of the expert sets you will need to use an existing MSDE or Microsoft SQL Server.
