FAQ: Install on Windows XP with ServicePack2

In the default configuration of Windows XP with ServicePack 2 web servers are not allowed to offer services to the network. Any access to web sites residing on a computer with Windows XP with ServicePack 2 with unchanged configuration will be blocked. To get powerKNOW running on Windows XP with ServicePack 2 you should follow these steps:

Internet Information Server (IIS)

  • First install all the prerequisites and powerKNOW itself on the machine as detailed in "FAQ: Install powerKNOW" (for IIS).

After finishing this powerKNOW will be accessible locally on this machine. (eg: Start Internet Explorer on this machine, URL: "localhost/powerKNOW").

  • Allow port 80 (Web server) to be accessed from the network.

    This can be done via
    ControlPanel
     > Network Connections
        > select your LAN connection and right click
           > Properties
              > Advanced Tab
                 > Windows Firewall settings
                    > General Tab:
make sure "Don't allow exceptions" is disabled
                    > Exceptions Tab
                       > Add Port: Name: WWW service
                                    Port number: 80
                                    Type: TCP

After that powerKNOW should be accessible from outside as well.

Cassini web server

  • First install all the prerequisites and powerKNOW itself with Cassini web server on the machine as detailed in "FAQ: Install powerKNOW".

After finishing this powerKNOW will be accessible locally on this machine. (eg: Start Internet Explorer on this machine, URL: "http://localhost:7756/GoToApplication.aspx?AppID=03157A7C-69C3-45D9-8F97-3A1173FAB458").

  • Identify which port Cassini uses to run powerKNOW
You can identify this port by starting powerKNOW with the URL "http://localhost:7756/GoToApplication.aspx?AppID=03157A7C-69C3-45D9-8F97-3A1173FAB458". In this case Cassini will redirect you to an URL which specifies the port powerKNOW is using. Normally this URL is shown in the address box of the browser window. It looks like "http://maschinename:nnnn/Default.aspx". "nnnn" is the port number we look for.

  • Allow port 7756 (Cassini web server) and the port of powerKNOW to be accessed from the network.

Access to a port can be allowed this way (you will have to do this twice for 7756 and the port number found above):
    ControlPanel
     > Network Connections
        > select your LAN connection and right click
           > Properties
              > Advanced Tab
                 > Windows Firewall settings
                    > General Tab:
make sure "Don't allow exceptions" is disabled
                    > Exceptions Tab
                       > Add Port: Name: WWW service
                                    Port number: nnnn
                                    Type: TCP

After that powerKNOW should be accessible from outside as well.
